A lot of people in the film community have a complicated relationship with the Academy. Oscar season always brings feelings of disappointment when the films they were gunning for don’t even get nominations, or heartwarming triumph when their favorite actor or actress finally snags the award they’ve deserved for years. I almost gave up on the Oscars myself last year after Blade Runner 2049, Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes all underperformed.
It was December 12th, 2018. The nominations for the Screen Actors Guild awards had just been announced, with many films beloved by the avid film community snubbed across the board. Toni Collette’s performance in Hereditary not being nominated for Best Actress was the straw that broke the camel’s back for a lot of people, myself included. The excessive love for Bohemian Rhapsody across awards circuits this year has also infuriated a lot of people, due to recent revelations about Bryan Singer. Then, someone had an idea.
While the final results have not yet been revealed, and we won’t know what the first Best Picture winner for the FTA will be for a little over three weeks, I found this entire process a significant event in my life. I’ve been obsessed with film for about four years now, and this experience has allowed me to find several hidden gems from this year that I otherwise probably would have never heard of. The nine Best Picture nominations are all hotly contested, but Maximiliano predicted that the winner would be “probably Roma, but my heart wants First Reformed”. While my opinion is in a little bit of a different place (If it couldn’t be Annihilation or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I can root for Lynne Ramsay’s wonderful You Were Never Really Here), I can’t wait to experience the future of the FTA. Maximiliano isn’t looking for this to be a one-time event either. In his final remarks, he said: “I’m hoping after the results go online that the people from Film Twitter know that our voices deserve to be heard and I’m also hoping to turn this into a yearly thing.” I couldn’t agree more myself.
